Can you pls help? I couldnot yet find the answers on how to go:
1. from Penang Airport to Penang Ferry (for departing to Langkawi)
2. from Langkawi ferry to Langkawi Airport
Can you pls guide me what the transport is, how far and prices?

Again, thank-you so much for all of your comments!

Penang Local Boy answers:

Hi there!

1. Penang International Airport is situated in the Bayan Lepas area of Penang. The airport is located 16km (10 miles) south of Georgetown, the capital city of Penang.

From the airport, to get to the ferry, which is called the ‘Swettenham Pier’ located in Georgetown, its the best for you to take a cab at the airport. The journey from the airport to the ferry will take you around 1 1/2 hour depends on the traffic.

The ferry to Langkawi departs from the Swettenham Pier. This is close to Beach Street, Weld Quay, Clock Tower and Esplanade. Daily there are two ferry services from Penang to Langkawi.
Departure times are at 08.30 am and 08.45 am. The latter ferry is going via Payar Island. The duration of the trip is approximately 2 hours 30 minutes.

The Langkawi ferry departs from Swettenham Pier which technically is at Weld Quay, but you enter the departure lounge from King Edward Place which is next to Fort Cornwallis and very near the clock tower at Beach Street.
The ferry tickets are not sold at the ferry terminal.
Ferry tickets for Langkawi can be bought from the various travel agencies located in those low buildings on the right.
You can better buy your tickets one day ahead.
The return from Langkawi is at 2.30 pm and 5.30 pm. The ferry of 2.30 is going via Pulau Payar. Avoid the Payar Island route as it saves about 15-20 mins of your journey!

2. From Langkawi Jetty point in Kuah (Kuah is the Capital Town of Langkawi) to the Langkawi Airport-

Taxi service is probably the only public transport available on the island. The most popular way of getting around is by renting a car or a motorbike.

For tourists coming to Langkawi by ferry, there is something you need to watch out for. Once you get off from the ferry at Kuah Jetty, you will be approached by a lot of ‘agents’ asking you to rent a car or book for accommodation. Don’t fall for it. They are from illegal car renting companies who also act as middlemen for some accommodations. You are guaranteed an expensive price for a poorly maintained vehicle. Why get involved with these illegal syndicates and risk your own safety? Just observe yourself, once they see the police coming, they flee. You can rent a nicely maintained car from the legitimate car renting booth in the ferry terminal building at a cheaper price.

You can still rent a car or motorbike at Pantai Cenang, if you decide not to rent one at the jetty. Remember to have sufficient fuel in the tank as gas stations are far from one another. Lastly, remember to drive safe and slowly on the island. There are tourists, children and often live stocks like chicken, cow and even buffalo crossing.

And so once again, public taxi/cab or rental car is the only mode of transportation of getting about in Langkawi. If you choose to rent a car, you can always return and leave the car at the airport but you must inform the rental car company that you will be leaving their car at the airport.

Sandy asks…

Which runway in Penang International Airport (PEN) is usually used for landing?

I’m going to Penang next week. I was hoping to see good views of Penang as the plane lands. My question is, do they usually use runway 04 (near the seaside) or is it at runway 22 (flying pass some factories and industrial areas)? I’m using a direct Air Asia flight from Kota Kinabalu in the morning.

Penang Local Boy answers:

Honey, it’s Penang, not Tuscany…they don’t assign your landing strip until you get clearance to land, it all depends on the air traffic, what’s on the ground and the conditions. Take yourself a nice little bus trip with camera and you’ll get more of Penang than you can stand.

Joseph asks…

How to get from Alor Setar to Penang Domestic Airport?

Duration,Mode and Frequency of Transportation,Fees(Appxly)
Thank you

Penang Local Boy answers:

Get into a taxi or bus (express is better)…if by bus, cross over to Penang by ferry, then get into another taxi to bring you to the airport.
If not, (this is better), just hire a taxi from Alor Setar straight to the Penang Airport.
Duration…just within 2 hours, traffic permitting.
Fees……..ask before you board the taxi.
Or, even better still, meet me somewhere after you cross the state border :-)
