Betty asks…

my family wants to travel to penang?

our plan is to buy a 3 day hotel package to penang, then make side trips by train to kuala lumpur and singapore then back to penang for return flight to HK. travel is expected to take around 7 days. i have read a similar query here in yahoo! answers but all respondents seemed to suggest the bus rather than the train. can anyone please explain why? taking the train seems a much better alternative (planes are out of the question)

Penang Local Boy answers:

If u’re taking train from KL to Penang, the journey will take approximately 10 hours. Train depart from KL Sentral at 8pm and arriving Penang (seberang Perai) at about 6am.

After arriving in Penang train station, either u need to take a ferry ride to penang island or taxi (which can cost u a lot), it will be too much trouble considering you bringing a lot of luggage.

People are more prefer to use buses due to its faster travel period and it stop at the city centre,
where a lot of cabs available and cheaper in price.
Travel from KL to Penang will only take about 5 hours journey..

However, depends on your preference on comfortability.
Take a train with the executive coach or room for two.
Using lavatories shouldn’t be a problem and it is much more cleaner than public toilets at the bus stop station.

Mandy asks…

HI. I’m going to malaysia then flying fm penang to Bangkok.I have 7 days in Thai but have to leave fm Bangkok?

What islands/hotel do you recomend in Thailand for this period?

Penang Local Boy answers:

Hi Flolie.I’d suggest Phuket, it is the biggest island in Thailand, and there are several excellent beaches. The waters are usually clear and very good for diving. As long as you avoid the usually crowded Patong and Karon beaches on the west coast, you can easily find remote beaches for walking, jogging, or just relaxing. There are not many sights to speak of on the island, but perhaps that makes it all so relaxed.

Two of the main attractions near Phuket are the Phi Phi Islands and the Phang Nga Bay, with the so-called James Bond Island. The name comes from The Bond film “Man with The Golden Gun” which was partly filmed on this small island. There is a good choice of organized day trips from Phuket to both the Phi Phi Islands and Phang Nga Bay.

Ocean activities are the biggest draw for tourists in Phuket. Courses and equipment are available at most major beaches for scuba diving, Scuba diving as well as snorkeling in the lagoons with coral reefs. You can find plenty of good dive sites all around Phuket (shark point, anemone reef, etc.) but there are some world class dive sites you don’t want to miss for any reason. You can join a 5 days live aboard to the Similan Islands , a natural reserve where you can spot wales sharks and manta rays. There is also the number one spot in the Andaman sea, Hin Daeng , situated just few hours of speed boat from Phuket. It is important to notice than coral reefs were left mostly untouched by the 2004 tsunami.

Patong Bay Garden Resot is great value for money and is suitable for a couple looking for a very romantic place to stay or likewise its suitable for a family because of the nice pool and close proximity to the beach! Also, good location for shopping and the night life on Bangla Road. Turn right out of the hotel and go down past Subway, there is a massage place that sits behind where you book tours. This place does the best foot massage, you’ll find it because they are always busy.

The rooms are quite large and have a nice balcony, with more than half overlooking the pool or beach. The buffet breakfast was great and they had an amazing assortment of food to choose from including bacon, eggs, sausages and fresh fruit and danishes, plus heaps more! The staff were very friendly and unobtrusive. Http://

Penang Local Boy answers:

If you’re at penang, dont waist $$$ on hotels. Get a tent and camp along the beaches.
